Beginning in the 1880s and into the early 20th century, clubs and lodges were the center of social activity. Lodge meetings were often a primary social event for Rush Countians. Members sometimes traveled many miles to enjoy an evening of fellowship. Organizations such as the Oddfellows and the United Workmen also provided much needed insurance assistance to their members. With the advent of motion pictures and radio followed by the popularity of television in the 1950s, many of these organizations found their numbers rapidly decreasing. Lodges consolidated with those in neighboring counties and by the end of the 20th century, most no longer had a presence in the county.

Veterans' organizations such as the Grand Army of the Republic were popular in the early days of Rush County because many of the early settlers had served in the Civil War. The return of soldiers after World War I and World War II brought about a strong sense of patriotism and a subsequent increase in membership to the American Legion and VFW. In the 21st century, an aging veteran population is threatening the survival of veteran's organizations as well.
